Appearance: Natsuo is a 12 year old boy with reddish purple/brown hair and green eyes. He also has cat ears and a tail, symbolizing virginity in the Loveless series. His hair is a reddish purple and little longer than shoulder length, with bangs. Natsuo's most defining characteristic, besides the cat ears and tail, is his eye patch over his missing right (green) eye. When he was younger, the boy poked it out with his finger in an effort to feel pain. He simply wondered what would happen if he stuck his finger all the way into his eyeball. Natsuo undoubtedly has multiple deep and shallow scars all over his body from unintentionally, or intentionally hurting himself.
He is can sometimes be seen clothed up in dresses or girls clothes, due to Nagisa's own fascination. While the first generation of female Zero's have their names on their chests, the Zero symbol for Natsuo and Youji has not appeared yet. It is unknown where there name will appear.
History: What would it be like if you couldn't feel pain? Natsuo and his Sacrifice Youji were artificially created and then trained by Nagisa Sagan as the ultimate team. She believed that not being able to feel pain would mean the Zero teams would fight to abandon, never giving up. Having never been defeated herself, Nagisa viewed the Zero team as an extension of her own abilities. Natsuo and Youji are the second team in the Zero series, the first being an older female team, Yamato and Kouya. What makes the second series different from the first is that Natsuo and Youji were artificially created. Yamato and Kouya were born naturally, and then modified, leading to the first series being defective and able to feel pain. As a result of the inability to feel pain, all modified pairs come out with the same name, Zero. They are not individuals, blessed with their own unique name.
Natsuo is the Fighter(Sentouki) of the 2nd generation Zero team, with Youji as his Sacrifice. Natsuo casts spells to create damage while Youji directs Natsuo and takes any damage from the opposing team during a spell battle. At the start of the series, the two of them were sent to defeat Soubi, Loveless' sentouki. Soubi finds them while they're trying to rape Ritsuka's teacher(since they're only twelve, it's unknown if they would have gone thorugh with it or just watched her squirm in fear. Because they're little sadists). The two brutally break the rules in an attempt to win their battle with Soubi, even going as far as nailing Soubi's hand to the ground instead of using their spells to win. Soubi in turn uses the weakness in the Zero series against them. They can't feel pain, and as a result they also can't control their own body temperature. He drops the temperature, creating frigid winds and ice until they go into hypothermia and get frostbite.
Having lost, they were considered strays. It was made very clear by Nagisa-sensei that they were not to return if they lost. They lucked out, and the Zero boys got to share Soubi's apartment. After spending some time and living with Soubi and drinking beer with his friend Kio, Nagisa called them back, and commanded them to go back to the academy for schooling. They needed to get stronger. Being forced to be schooled by Ritsu-sensei was not their idea of fun, having been trained all their life by Nagisa-sensei.
Shortly after their return, Seimei, Soubi's previous Sacrifice, returns. When Seimei attacks and gouges out Ritsu's eyes, the Zero's volunteer to help track down Seimei. Nagisa, hysterical by this point and terrified for her precious Zero's safety, proclaims that they are too weak to fight, that they will die, and at the same time, that she doesn't care at all about it. Going to fend off Seimei, they proclaim to the rest of the academy that whatever happens from thereon in is all their fault. Confronting Seimei, Natsuo tries to control his name. Despite receiving conflicting orders from Nagisa and Ritsu about whether to just stop Seimei or kill him, Seimei is eventually driven from the building.
They report back they they have succeeded and go to rescue Soubi's friend Kio, who now has also been captured by another pair. During this they live their worst nightmare, which is being replaced by the female Zero pair and disowned by Nagisa. After, they tell Nagisa that they're worried about Ritsuka and go live with Soubi, telling Soubi instead that Nagisa told them to go live with him, not wanting to appear weak and sentimental. Things go back to how things were before, eating Soubi's food, drinking his beer, playing his video games and lounging on his couch. And, unfortunately, going to school. That part was not so fun. Soubi was forced to put a small spell on their teacher to avoid her remembering the Zero's attempted rape, which would have been problematic.
Personality: At first glance, Nastuo might seem sadistic and cruel, but his bond with Youji runs deep. Although the Zero series were created with the ability to change partner's, both the first and second generation Zero's are more than a pair, unwilling to be separated and interchanged. Natsuo and Youji are almost as inseparable as two people can be, even to the point of loosing their individuality. The two simply don't know how to exist without each other.
Like his Sacrifice Youji, Natsuo is rather interested in pain. He's interested in what it feels like, what causes it, every aspect of pain fascinates him because he has no idea what it is like. He tries to cause physical pain to others or asks what it feels like, observing their reactions and trying to infer from them what pain might be like. He has no way to feel it and the inability to know it is an endless fascination, even to the point of hurting others or himself in his quest to know pain. While Natsuo might act cruel and sadistic sometimes, he's also quite capable of being nice to his friends. Natsuo is a little nicer than Youji. And above all, he's still only twelve. His actions have an immature quality to them, from his own lack of experience with the world.
He acts rather spoiled at the beginning of the series, mainly because he hasn't lost. They both think they're invincible (and, of course, they're 12). When Natsuo(or Youji) want something, they expect it to be given to them. They are rather blatant and outspoken in their desires and wishes. Very bratty, and they both have no filter. He will totally bring up insensitive topics like rape, incest and child abuse without thinking twice, he's brutally honest.
In his mind, anyone who falls for a trick, loses a fight, gets hurt or dies deserves it because they fell for it. He has no respect for adults(or children for that matter) and typically say whatever is on their minds. Natsuo has a very vulgar vocabulary.
Natsuo's solution to problems is usually a violent one and only goes to show how little experience he has had with actual love and caring, or real-life experience outside the academy. Before Soubi kindly adopted the little brats, no one has actually offered to let them stay in their house before or really shown them kindness. Natsuo doesn't believe in justice or fairness, life is intrinsically sucky. When Natsuo learns that Ritsuka's mother is abusing him, his reaction is that he should just fight back, or that his mother should just abandon him instead. He can't understand stressful situations or the complexities of a parent-child relationship. He believes that Ritsuka's mother should just 'suck it up', because she knew what she was getting into in the first place by having children. He's actually excited to learn that Nagisa's treatment of them constitutes child abuse and neglect. Natsuo and Youji believe that they are strong because they are together, but without each other, such strength would be impossible.
In respect to his Sacrifice Youji, Natsuo will do what he commands, in battle or outside of battle. Youji's authority is absolute. This respect doesn't extend to anyone else besides Nagisa. Their relationship is different than Soubi and Seimei's, which is one of absolute command. Natsuo and Youji are more interwoven, and each knowing their place as a Sacrifice or Fighter Unit/Sentouki, where one ends and the other begins. However, just because Natsuo obeys Youji's orders, does not mean he will obey anyone else's. He's submissive to Youji and Youji alone.
Nagisa's relationship with Natsuo is a troubled one. Nagisa, who you might call Natsuo's makeshift mother, blatantly prefers Youji (having created Youji in the image of her dead sister, this isn't really surprising). Often, Nagisa ignores Natsuo completely. He's almost an afterthought, a Sentouki created because Youji has to have a partner to be complete, and it can't be Nagisa. Natsuo is rather jealous of their relationship, feeling Nagisa is trying to create a bond that she can never have with Youji. Youji is his and his alone. He often brushes it off, saying that it's okay Nagisa prefers Youji—-he prefers Youji too. But he still yearns for her approval and is irritated that he has to fight for attention must less affection from her. And even though Nagisa prefers Youji, she still looks out for Natsuo as well, warning them about the temperature of hot beverages, or when to be careful. In short, she acts as their mother, albeit a very screwed up one.
With Youji not being in the Medietas, Natsuo will start to have to think for himself and finding out who he is without his Sacrifice. It's not that he's incapable of thinking for himself, it's just that as a Sentouki, he's used to (and has been trained to) follow his Sacrifice's orders and will. He'll be rather bratty, and probably put people through hell with a little mutilation('playing' with others or himself). Natsuo will undoubtedly gravitate toward any sort of parental figure or friend on the islands. He will still be a completely bitchy brat toward them, but it helps cement the process that Soubi started—-helping him have a normal childhood. He's still learning how to behave in public, and not having Youji around will probably help keep him in line. He doesn't have his Sacrifice as backup or instigator. Growing up with Nagisa, he never learned correct, sane behavior. Hopefully he'll find someone here patient enough to teach him.
Natsuo also likes cutting things up and playing with knives. If he's lucky enough not to be causing any harm, he's can be quite crafty. He's quite intelligent as well, and is capable of getting perfect scores at school if he wants too. He doesn't actually like going to school but, like Youji, believes that everyone is completely capable of getting 100% on homework and tests, they're not going to be tested on anything they haven't learned yet. Not getting a 100% is laziness and stupidity, especially on a test that wasn't designed to trick you. It just means you weren't paying careful enough attention. This is due to the excellence that Nagisa expected of them when she trained them. Nothing below perfection was tolerated.
Powers/Abilities/Talents:
Sentouki: Natsuo is the Sentouki or Fighter of the male Zero Unit. Natsuo has the power to fight battles in the Loveless Universe by using words to create spells and magical effects using words or poetry. The strength and clarity of the Sentouki's words and visualization of the words give the spell more power. Being with or close to his Sacrifice, Youji, he can speed up healing for the damage he or his Sacrifice has taken during battle. However, being separated from his Sacrifice, his power is halved(and Natsuo is unlikely to start anything spell wise without Youji).
Zero have the ability to hypnotize and take possession of a person if they know their full name, controlling their actions. (A permissions post will be put up for all of this!) He is also linked by an magically visible thread to Youji, and can hear him call when he needs him.
Congenital analgesia: Like all Zero's, he is made to be interchangeable with another Zero Fighter. Not that he will go willingly. The ability to not feel pain is not a some superhuman power, but genetic and a weakness. Their nerves simply do not function, and as a result they can feel pressure and touch, but not pain, temperature, pleasure, tickling, etc and cannot control for extremes in body temperature, causing hypo or hyperthermia. He also can't feel the effects of intoxication until it's too late. He acknowledges that due to his lack of ability to feel pain, he won't live long, knowing that those like him have a very low survival rate. Pain is a warning system they don't have.
As he can't feel pain, Natsuo does things that no one who feels pain would ever do, such as leaving a thumb inside a cup of scalding hot coffee( or you know, poking their own eye out due to curiosity). His lack of pain is a danger to himself as well as others. A bored Zero is a dangerous Zero. However, he's gotten good at checking himself periodically to make sure that he's not dripping blood or got appendicitis and just didn't notice. He'll wait a good five or ten minutes before eating or drinking anything potentially too hot. He could easily drink scalding water and just not notice. He's still likely to unintentionally hurt himself, but he's at least gotten better at being careful and hasn't broken as many bones as he used too. Likewise, he's gotten much better at trying to keep himself warm when it's cold out and cooler when it's hot out, relying on things like weather apps to judge since he himself cannot.
Mundane:
Natsuo's quite crafty with knives and is a great liar. He is also fluent in both english and japanese.
